A customer came to me to make a live edge bed. I layed out my design for him and he agreed. He wanted to get the slab wood himself. He found the most beautiful piece of sycamore I have yet seen!
I finished it with an oil varnish mix. The slab had so much spalting (which is where the wood starts rotting) that the wood was very weak. I could scrape off wood with my fingernail. So, using a oil varnish mix which soaks in deep into the fibers of the wood and hardens, which locks the fiber in place and protects the wood.
The end product turned out great. The color from the spalting really stands out. I have not seen the equal to this wood yet.
